State Police say two teens from Canisteo were killed early Saturday morning in a crash in the town of Wellsville.
Troopers responded around 2:24 a.m. on Saturday to Tarantine Boulevard, where investigators determined a 2020 Buick Encore was traveling east when it left the road on a sharp curve and struck a utility pole on the driver’s side.
The SUV had six teenage occupants. Four of them — a 17-year-old driver, a 14-year-old front passenger, and two passengers aged 15 and 16 — suffered minor injuries and were taken to Jones Memorial Hospital.
Two others, identified as 17-year-old Derrick Smith and 18-year-old Gavin Odell, both of Canisteo, were pronounced dead at the scene. Smith had been riding in the tailgate area of the vehicle, while Odell was sitting behind the driver. Autopsies have been scheduled.
State Police said there were no signs of impairment, and the investigation remains ongoing. The NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting.
