After more than two decades of service, Investigator Jami Pier officially retired on Friday from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, closing out a 23-year career marked by leadership, professionalism, and a strong commitment to the community.
Pier joined the Sheriff’s Office on September 23, 2002, after graduating from the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy, where she earned the Academic Achievement Award as the top academic cadet in her class.
She began her career as a Deputy Sheriff, including time with the department’s Marine Patrol, before spending more than nine years as a Civil Deputy in the Civil Office. In addition to her regular duties, Pier also served as a Trustee for the Tompkins County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association.
In February 2021, she was promoted to Investigator in recognition of her strong work ethic and her ability to build positive relationships within the community.
Throughout her career, Pier received numerous honors. She was named Kiwanis Officer of the Month twice, in 2015 and again in 2026. In 2025, she earned the Distinguished Service Medal and later became the first recipient of the Advocacy Center’s Louise Mill Award for her dedication to supporting victims of sexual assault.
Sheriff Derek R. Osborne said Pier exemplified service, integrity, and compassion throughout her career and that her contributions will have a lasting impact on both the agency and the community.
Pier now begins retirement after more than 23 years with the department.
