Tompkins County officials have decided the Board of Elections will remain within the City of Ithaca during the upcoming Center of Government construction project, following strong public opposition to a proposed temporary move to Lansing.
County Administrator Korsah Akumfi said the decision came after hearing from residents through calls, emails, and in-person conversations, many expressing concerns about accessibility and the importance of keeping election operations in the county seat.
“Keeping the BOE within the seat of government is not only a logistical necessity but a symbolic commitment to the values of transparency, accessibility, and civic trust,” said Greg Mezey, vice-chair of the Tompkins County Legislature.
Officials are now exploring alternative locations within Ithaca to keep the BOE operating without disruption during redevelopment. Legislature Chair Dan Klein said the move reflects the county’s commitment to maintaining a fair and accessible democratic process while ensuring continuity of services.
