A group of people stranded on an island in the Canisteo River were safely rescued over the weekend thanks to a coordinated response by the Bath Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team.
The incident began around 2:44 p.m. on Saturday with reports of a child stuck in a tube in the river. Upon arrival, responders discovered that it was actually a group of individuals trapped on an island, surrounded by fast-moving water.
Bath’s Swift Water Technicians launched a rescue boat upstream and navigated downriver to reach the group. Over the course of three trips across the raging waters, all individuals were brought safely to shore.
No injuries were reported in the operation, which concluded with all units cleared from the scene four hours later.
