Four distinguished Steuben County residents joined scores of prominent people in the county Hall of Fame after their formal induction by the county Legislature.
Charles J. Alsheimer, Helen K. Brink, Maj. Gen. Otto Marshal, and Dr. James E. Walker were selected by the county Hall Of Fame Committee for their impact on Steuben County and across the world.
Alsheimer was a prolific and acclaimed author and nature photographer who was featured in hundreds of national magazines. Brink is a history scholar who researched and brought awareness to all the cemeteries in Steuben County preserving centuries of County history. Marshal was one of the original settlers of Wheeler and a leader in the establishment of the Steuben County Agricultural Society and the Steuben County Fair. Walker was a world-famous medical practitioner who cured patients with Tuberculosis and accepted a position at the Steuben Sanatorium. He also used radical medical procedures he learned while traveling around the world.
The nominees joined more than 150 people inducted into the county Hall of Fame since 1976, including former US Congressman Amo Houghton and rock legend Duane Eddy.
In 1976, the Steuben County Board of Supervisors deemed it necessary to create the Steuben County Hall of Fame for the Bicentennial Year of our Nation. A committee of 12 people representative of the people of Steuben County was formed to review submitted nominations from the public. The committee was to present their recommendations to the Steuben County Board of Supervisors for approval.
The Hall of Fame has continued each year, with the exception of 1998 to, 2002 when there was a lack of interest from the public. In 2003, the Historian’s Office became involved in this endeavor and has successfully recaptured the excitement of the public.
