Steuben County officials are alerting residents to a scam involving emails that appear to come from county employees.
The county says scammers have been impersonating county email addresses in an effort to obtain banking information and wire funds. Officials stressed that legitimate county emails always end in “steubencountyny.gov” and employees do not use Gmail for official business. They also noted that all county banking is conducted within New York State.
Law enforcement is investigating, and residents are urged to use caution before providing personal or financial information over the phone or by email. Anyone who receives a suspicious message or has information about the scam should contact the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office at (607) 622-3903.
