One Steuben County village has a new police chief. Less than a month after Colin Taft announced his sudden retirement from the post, the village of Bath has made a conditional offer to Donald Lewis as police chief. Lewis has accepted the officer, which is contingent on a successful civil service exam and a background check.
Lewis is currently a Criminal Investigator and Assistant SWAT Commander with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. He started in law enforcement career in 1997 with the Canisteo Police Department and became a full-time deputy sheriff with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in 1998. He was also employed with the Village of Bath Police Department as a Part-Time Police Officer from 2003 to 2008. In 2012, Lewis was promoted to his current title with the Sheriff’s Department.
In a statement, Bath Mayor Michael Sweet said “The village is confident Lewis’s experience and dedication to the law enforcement profession will immensely benefit the village of Bath Police Department and the village as a whole.”
