The Civil Defense Training Center on Route 54 in Bath is now home to a plaque that memorializes the 300 residents of Steuben County who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Steuben County Legislative Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick, County Manager Jack Wheeler, and Public Health Director Darlene Smith unveiled the plaque on October 17th which was also dedicated to the first responders, medical personnel, and essential workers who played pivotal roles during the COVID-19 response. The ceremony provided a moment of gratitude and remembrance, reflecting on the sacrifices made during the crisis and acknowledging the deep loss experienced by so many families.
“Our intent for this COVID-19 memorial is to provide a space for all in the community to remember those that we lost and to honor those who sacrificed so much during the response. We hope it provides a measure of peace, acceptance, and resolution to those affected,” said Public Health Director Smith.
The plaque stands as a lasting tribute to the collective efforts of the county’s healthcare professionals, emergency workers, and other essential personnel who responded to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, and to the individuals and families whose lives were forever changed by the virus.
