Steuben County residents are being targeted by scam callers who are impersonating law enforcement officers. That’s according to Sheriff Jim Allard, who said the scammer made it appear as if the call was coming from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office on the recipient’s caller ID.
Allard said the most common scam currently involves the callers being told they have missed a court appearance, that they were facing charges and would have a warrant issued for their arrest unless they reported to the Sheriff’s Office to be arrested, or they could pay the fines via PayPal. The Sheriff wants to remind the public that the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you asking for money related to missing court or any other legal matters.
If you receive such a call, hang up, and report it to law enforcement.
