Steuben County Sheriff Warns of “Amber Alert” Scam

SHARE NOW

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam targeting families and asking for personal information about children.

Authorities say callers posing as a company are contacting people and claiming they need identifying details for “Amber Alert purposes.” The sheriff’s office stressed that law enforcement will not randomly call residents to request a child’s personal information.

Officials said personal details such as names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, or photos should never be shared with unknown callers. They noted that legitimate requests for information would only happen in connection with an actual investigation.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is advised not to engage, hang up immediately, and report the incident to local law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office is urging residents to spread the word and verify any questionable requests directly with authorities.
