Steuben County Man Killed After Being Hit by Train

SHARE NOW

A Steuben County man is dead after being struck by a train over the weekend.

It happened shortly before 4 Saturday afternoon in the town of Big Flats. An initial investigation by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office shows the Norfolk Southern Railway train was traveling west behind Simmons Rockwell when it came upon a person walking on the tracks within the rails toward the train. Despite the conductor of the train sounding the horn and applying the brakes, Timothy Galusha, of Hornell, was struck and killed.

Police say the 29-year-old was living with a relative in Big Flats and was walking to work at Consumer Square when the accident happened. It is believed Galusha couldn’t hear the train because of the ear buds he was wearing.
