A Steuben County man was convicted on Thursday on multiple charges stemming from the violent shaking of his infant daughter in 2022.
26-year-old Robert Taft was found guilty of two counts each of assault, reckless assault of a child, and reckless endangerment. According to Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker, the incident occurred in October 2022 when the child was approximately three months old. Eyewitness testimony and physical evidence presented during the trial confirmed that Taft shook the infant with such force that she sustained a near-fatal brain injury. Now nearly three years old, the child lives with permanent brain damage as a result of the assault.
Taft, who resides in Hornell, has been held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 1. He could face up to 25 years in prison for the most serious charges.
