Steuben County continues to clean up from Monday’s severe thunderstorms.
Utility crews, and state, county, and local highway crews continue to work to clear roadways and reestablish power. As of Tuesday morning, 9,500 electric customers were without power.
Tim Marshall, Director of Public Safety, recommends residents use caution when travelling and stay away from any down lines.
“Safety is our utmost priority; we urge residents to stay clear of down lines. Use caution around damaged trees and while operating portable generators,” Marshall said.
Generators should only be used in well-ventilated areas to prevent exposure to Carbon Monoxide.
Additionally, in the event of a power outage, a refrigerator can keep food safe for up to four hours. If power is lost for over four hours, you’re advised to throw out perishable food such as meat, fish, eggs, and leftovers.
With more thunderstorms likely, more storm damage may occur.
