Steuben County Adopts 2026 Budget With 1.9% Tax Levy Increase

The Steuben County Legislature on Monday approved the county’s 2026 budget following a scheduled public hearing, finalizing a spending plan that raises the property tax levy by 1.9 percent. The increase remains below the current inflation rate, according to county officials.

County leaders say the budget reflects continued financial stability while maintaining support for essential services throughout Steuben County. The spending plan balances day-to-day operational needs with long-term priorities, despite ongoing cost pressures faced by local governments across the state.

Rising mandated social service expenses, personnel costs, and inflation in materials and maintenance continue to challenge county budgets. Steuben County’s plan continues investments in key areas, including public safety, transportation, and social services.

Officials said the adopted budget preserves the county’s reserve levels, supports its capital plans, and maintains an overall conservative fiscal approach. They noted the county remains in a strong financial position heading into 2026.

County Manager Jack Wheeler said the budget reflects both stability and the county’s ongoing commitment to residents.

“Adopting a budget in today’s financial environment is never simple, but this year’s plan is a strong reflection of Steuben County’s stability and our commitment to the people we serve,” Wheeler said. “Even with increasing state mandates and inflationary pressures, we were able to maintain essential services and keep the property tax levy increase minimal. This budget positions us well for 2026 and continues the steady, responsible path that taxpayers expect.”
