Schuyler Public Health Hosting Lead Training

Schuyler County Public Health’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is hosting a Lead Renovator Training this week at the Human Services Complex in Montour Falls. This class is possible thanks to a partnership with and funds from Cornell University’s Industrial Labor Relations School. This training offers area professionals the opportunity to earn their Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Renovation Repair and Paint Initial Certification at no cost.

Thursday’s session runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“Being able to offer this training is very exciting,” said Brook Heichel, Schuyler County Public Health’s Lead Program Coordinator. “I would encourage anyone who works on older homes or is in the construction industry to get trained to safely renovate lead. More lead-safe renovations lead to healthier families in our community.”

The Lead Renovator Training is 8 contact hours with classroom and hands-on activities and an examination. Federal law requires that contractors performing renovation, repair or painting (RRP) work that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, childcare facilities and schools built before 1978 follow lead-safe work practices. This training is appropriate for building contractors, maintenance staff, plumbers, electricians, and painters who may disturb more than six square feet of lead paint.

Lead is highly toxic to exposed people and animals. Schuyler County continues to have an abundance of older homes built before 1978 before lead was no longer in paint. Renovation to older homes poses a risk of lead exposure when lead-safe means are not used.

Schuyler County Public Health thanks the Finger Lakes Lead Coalition and Art Wheaton, RRP Instructor from Cornell University for providing this opportunity to our community. Call Schuyler County Public Health at 607-535-8140 for more information or to register.
