Schuyler Hospital has announced that Shelley Abbey has been awarded the 2024 Lou Sand Award. This award is given annually to an employee of the hospital in memory of Lou Sand, a former Board member. Abbey is a Schuyler Hospital Lab Assistant.
The award recognizes those who demonstrate exemplary service to others and whose compassionate commitment to service to their fellow employees, patients, residents, and community brightens the lives of those they touch; traits exemplified by Lou Sand. The recipient is nominated by their peers.
In announcing the award, the Hospital stated “Abbey has volunteered to work long hours to cover critical staff shortages, and always with a smile on her face. Multiple peer nominations also mentioned her kindness and helpfulness, along with her friendliness to both patients and employees. One nomination gave an example of Abbey working with a younger patient who was “terrified of bloodwork,” distracting and relaxing her while she got her blood taken – so much so that the patient was surprised by how quickly the process went.”
Abbey was presented with the award along with the traditional yellow flowers that represent Ms. Sand. Abbey’s name will be placed on a plaque in the hospital’s main hallway.
