Schuyler County’s February Jobless Rate 2nd Highest in NY

February’s unemployment rate in Schuyler County was the second highest in the state.

According to the State Department of Labor, Schuyler County’s jobless rate for February was 6.6 percent, up from 6 percent in January.  The Schuyler County rate ranked second behind Hamilton County, which recorded its unemployment at 7.6 percent.

There was a slight increase in Yates County’s unemployment from 4.4 percent in January to 4.6 percent in February. Tompkins County had one of the state’s lowest unemployment rates for February at 3.6 percent, Seneca County’s was 5.1 percent and Steuben County’s was 5.2 percent.

The New York State Department of Labor reports rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.

New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined from 4.4% in January to 4.3% in February 2025.
