You can add Schuyler County to the list of counties across New York urging Governor Kathy Hochul to rescind her recent Executive Order barring at least 2,000 terminated state corrections officers from future employment in state or local governments.
In a joint letter, County Legislature Chairman Carl Blowers and Sheriff Kevin Rumsey urge the Governor to “reconsider this ill-conceived, arbitrary and capricious order and immediately reverse your decision.” Both men added they strongly believe their employees, especially those in positions of great responsibility like corrections officers, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Schuyler County said at a time when local governments are grappling with severe staffing shortages and the need for qualified, experienced personnel, the stance by the Governor only exacerbates the crisis.
County Attorney Steven Getman tells Finger Lakes Daily News that his office is considering filing a lawsuit against the governor, much like the one Chemung County filed last week.
