On behalf of the Towns, Villages, and School Districts in Schuyler County, the County Real Property Office has coordinated a response to a recently enacted NY State Mandate requiring that all residential property owners receive additional notice about the eligibility requirements for the limited income senior citizen property tax exemption provided for under NYS RPTL 467.
To that end, a postcard will be mailed on Monday (see below) to all residential property owners directing them to contact their Assessor for more information, but ONLY if they are 65 years of age or older and meet the residency and income requirements.
The county expects this will generate quite a bit of attention and questions from the public. To help mitigate any confusion and ensure the intended audience is made aware of this tax exemption, the Real Property office is alerting residents in advance as they expect some may suspect this of being a fraudulent mailing.
