Schuyler County Legislature to Hold Special Meeting on Opioid Settlements

SHARE NOW

The Schuyler County Legislature will hold a special meeting on Monday at 10 a.m. to consider approving settlement agreements related to ongoing opioid litigation.

The meeting, called by the Clerk of the Legislature at the direction of the Chair, will focus on two key items: a settlement with several smaller opioid manufacturers and distributors, and agreements tied to the nationwide Purdue Pharma/Sackler litigation.

According to the County Attorney’s Office, the smaller settlements involve companies including Alvogen, Amneal, Apotex, Hikma, Indivior, Mylan, Sun Pharma, and Zydus Pharmaceuticals. Collectively, these agreements are expected to generate $720 million in cash and pharmaceutical products distributed across states and local governments, with payments to Schuyler County beginning in 2026. Some settlements also provide medications for opioid overdose or addiction treatment and include restrictions on marketing and monitoring programs by the companies.

The second item involves agreements related to Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. As part of a revised bankruptcy plan, the Sacklers will contribute $6.5 billion over 15 years, with restrictions on their involvement in the opioid industry. Schuyler County is expected to execute several settlement documents to participate in the agreements. Funds received by the county would be used for prevention, treatment, education, and other opioid-abatement efforts.

County officials say entering into the settlements will allow Schuyler County to avoid prolonged litigation while providing resources to address the ongoing impacts of the opioid crisis. The meeting will also ratify the special session itself and authorize the County Attorney to execute necessary documents.
