The Schuyler County Legislature has approved legal documents finalizing two landmark opioid settlements, totaling more than $7 billion. County Attorney Steven Getman says the agreements will provide critical resources for treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.
The settlements include:
- A $720 million national settlement with eight pharmaceutical companies, including Alvogen, Mylan, and Zydus. Schuyler County and New York State counties could receive up to $38.7 million collectively, along with approximately $86 million in treatment medications or cash payments.
- A $7.4 billion Purdue Pharma and Sackler family settlement, ending the Sacklers’ control of Purdue and barring them from selling opioids in the U.S. Funds from the settlement will support programs nationwide over the next 15 years.
“These settlements mark a significant step toward continued accountability for the opioid crisis that has devastated our communities,” said Getman. “The funds will provide essential support for residents in recovery and prevent future harm,” added Schuyler County Administrator M. Shawn Rosno.
Since 2021, Schuyler County has secured over $862,000 from previous opioid-related settlements, including payments from Johnson & Johnson, McKesson, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, Teva, Actavis, and Sandoz.
The county’s 2018 lawsuit, filed with the law firm Napoli Shkolnik PLLC, alleged that major pharmaceutical companies misrepresented the risks of long-term opioid use. The case remains pending, with additional settlements possible.
