Troopers in Schuyler County are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that happened Monday afternoon on State Route 13.
Authorities say Schuyler County 911 received a report around 2:09 p.m. of an erratic vehicle traveling southbound. Troopers were sent to investigate, but were then redirected to a crash involving a vehicle fire.
When they arrived, a Subaru Forester was fully engulfed in flames. Initial attempts to put out the fire were unsuccessful due to its intensity, but firefighters from Horseheads Town and Country Fire Department were able to extinguish it.
After the fire was out, troopers discovered a deceased individual in the driver’s seat. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle went off the road, hit a cattle fence, traveled through a field for about 75 to 100 yards, and then struck a tree.
The Chemung County Medical Examiner was called to the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered to confirm the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.
The vehicle has been removed, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
