Schuyler County is among a select group of upstate communities that have expressed interest in hosting a major new nuclear energy project being explored by the New York Power Authority.
The Power Authority has released a list of 23 companies and eight communities across the state that have signaled their willingness to participate in the development of a proposed one-gigawatt nuclear energy facility.
Schuyler County is one of only a handful of communities statewide included on the list, joining St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Oswego counties in the North Country, along with Rochester, Dunkirk, Wayne County, and Broome County.
State officials say the list reflects preliminary interest and does not represent a final decision on the location of the plant. The project is still in early planning stages as the Power Authority explores options for expanding New York’s carbon-free energy capacity.
The proposed one-gigawatt nuclear facility would represent one of the largest clean-energy infrastructure investments in the state in decades and is intended to support New York’s long-term climate and energy goals.
No timeline has been announced for selecting a site, and no formal proposals have yet been submitted.
Officials say additional community engagement and environmental review would be required before any project could move forward.
