SCCUDD Honors Local Alcohol Retailers

SHARE NOW

The Schuyler County Coalition on Underage Drinking and Drugs (SCCUDD) in conjunction with the Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes (CAAFL) perform Compliance Checks with participating Schuyler County alcohol retailers. The program is limited to a small, voluntary group of retailers and happens twice per year.

Alcohol compliance checks are one way to reduce the availability of alcohol to underage youth from commercial sources such as wineries, liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores.

Under the supervision of an adult, youth are sent into local retail locations to determine if the employee will properly decline to sell to the underage buyer. In the event the employee fails the compliance check, by selling or providing alcohol to the underage buyer, the adult supervisor would intervene and take appropriate action to address the illegal sale. Those retailers that do not pass the check are provided Safe Server Training information by SCCUDD.

By preventing youth access from alcohol retailers, communities can decrease the harmful consequences related with underage drinking, thereby creating a safer, healthier environment for their youth.

SCCUDD would like to thank and recognize the following 10 participating alcohol retailers for their vigilance in ensuring the safety of Schuyler County Youth by passing our most recent Compliance Check. Those retailers include the Burdette Dandy Mini Mart, Linda’s Citgo, 7-Eleven, Watkins Glen Wine & Spirits, Cayuta Dandy Mini Mart, Hazlitt Winery, Sinclair, Wright’s Beverages, Odessa Dandy Mini Mart, and Hector Dandy Mini Mart.

“I think this is a great program and service that SCCUDD provides to the community” said Bobby Kerz, former owner of Watkins Glen Wine & Spirits “I only wish they could do this more often than twice year.”

“Program participants seem happy and proud when they receive the SCCUDD Shining Star recognition certificate for passing the check” stated SCCUDD Project Coordinator Ward Brower “Some retailers, like 7-Eleven even proudly display them for customers to see.”

SCCUDD is a group of dedicated community members, businesses, and agencies that work to prevent, reduce, and delay the onset of substance use among Schuyler County youth by collaborating with our community partners, promoting prevention education and substance-free activities, and implementing environmental strategies. SCCUDD works to reduce youth use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs as they can cause lifelong problems. SCCUDD’s vision is a connected community where youth have education, resources, and drug-free options to help their journey to become happy, healthy adults.
