Cayuga Medical Center is celebrating the restoration work on eight historic sculptures at its Mitchell Gardens in Ithaca.
Eight New Deal-era sculptures have been restored, representing the only Works Progress Administration artworks in Tompkins County.
Artist Steve Carver, in collaboration with Cayuga Medical Center, led the restoration efforts, volunteering his talents to address the effects of weathering on the sculptures. He had previously done work on the sculptures in 2016 with art conservator Kasia Maroney.
“These sculptures aren’t just art, they are our county’s connection to a pivotal era in history. I’m honored to help preserve them for future generations,” said Carver.
The sculptures were originally created in the 1930s and installed at what was once the Biggs Memorial Hospital children’s tuberculosis ward.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have these beautiful sculptures in the gardens at Cayuga Medical Center,” said Steph Bailey, Director of Philanthropy for Cayuga Health. “This project showcases how a small investment in regular maintenance can sustain an important part of our community’s cultural heritage.”
