Cornell University is mourning the loss of 18-year-old freshman Joselyn Garcia, who was found unresponsive in her dormitory room early on September 19. She was later pronounced deceased, just weeks into her first semester at the university.
According to The Ithaca Voice, police scanner traffic indicated first responders arrived shortly after 6 a.m. and described Garcia as unconscious and intoxicated. CPR efforts began at 6:16 a.m., but by 6:40, the Tompkins County medical examiner was contacted.
The university confirmed Garcia’s death in an email to students in the College of Arts and Sciences on Friday afternoon. Dean Peter John Loewen said Garcia was a first-generation college student who aspired to become a dentist. A graduate of Baruch High School in New York City, she was active in her school’s yearbook club and took part in Cornell’s Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars Program, designed to help students transition to college life.
No further details have been released by the university or law enforcement officials.
