Concerned residents will gather outside the Schuyler County Legislature on Monday evening to protest the county’s bid to site a nuclear power plant of any size within the county.
Schuyler County is among a select group of upstate communities that have expressed interest in hosting a major new nuclear energy project being explored by the New York Power Authority.
The Power Authority has released a list of 23 companies and eight communities across the state that have signaled their willingness to participate in the development of a proposed one-gigawatt nuclear energy facility.
Yvonne Taylor, Vice President of Seneca Lake Guardian, urged local leaders to reconsider the request to the New York Power Authority. “Recent studies point to the costly construction, slow start-up, and increased risk of cancer associated with nuclear power plants as reasons to reject the siting of a nuclear power plant anywhere in New York State,” Taylor said. “Schuyler County’s request—even for a small plant—is short-sighted and irresponsible. Citizens from across the region are showing up to tell decision-makers to advance renewable energy and protect our health, not invest in a financial boondoggle.”
