Potter residents will vote on Tuesday on two ballot propositions that could change key town positions from elected to appointed. If approved, Proposition One would make the town clerk an appointed position, while Proposition Two would do the same for the highway superintendent.
Town officials argue that the increasing complexity of these roles requires qualified candidates and that appointments would ensure the necessary expertise. The Yates County Personnel Office would first approve applicants before Town Board interviews.
The Town Board has publicly stated it is not trying to take away the voting rights of residents but is trying to protect taxpayer money and appoint qualified individuals to these positions.
Voting will take place Tuesday at the Potter Fire Hall from 2 until 8 p.m.
If you are unable to vote in person, absentee ballots can be picked up at the Yates County Board of Elections until the day of election at 417 Liberty St., Suite 1124, Penn Yan.
