State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a series of recent “smash and grab” vehicle thefts in the eastern portion of the county.
The crimes involve suspects breaking car windows and stealing valuables within seconds, often from unoccupied vehicles parked in public areas.
On Wednesday, Troopers received a report of a vehicle parked near Dryden Lake that had its passenger-side window smashed. Thieves stole multiple items, including a wallet containing identification and credit cards.
That same day, another victim reported their vehicle was broken into while parked along Chaffee Road, and several items were taken. The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department also responded to four additional break-ins involving parked, unoccupied vehicles between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, secure valuables, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.
