Penn Yan Institution Celebrates 55 Years in Business

SHARE NOW

Longs’ Cards and Books, a cherished staple in the Penn Yan community, is thrilled to celebrate 55 years as a family-owned and run business. Founded in 1969 by avid readers Mildred and Jim Long Sr., the store has grown from its humble beginnings at 107 Main Street into a cornerstone of the Yates County community.

Originally opened as a small family-run business, Longs’ quickly became a beloved destination for books, greeting cards, office supplies, and more. In 1981, following his graduation from Northeastern University, Jim Long Jr. purchased the business from his parents, relocating it to 101 Main Street. Jim secured the current location at 115 Main Street in 1990, solidifying the store’s presence in the heart of Penn Yan.

Throughout the years, Mildred and Jim Sr. continued to support the business part-time, watching it flourish under their son’s leadership. Their dedication to the community extended beyond their store, as Jim and his wife, Gloria, became prominent figures in local philanthropy.

In 2011, the couple was honored with the prestigious Stork Award for Community Service in recognition of their efforts to give back to Yates County. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Longs’ remained a vital resource for the community, providing much-needed home office, school supplies, and of course a variety of books when folks were spending more time at home.

From Finger Lakes apparel and gifts to an extensive selection of books and cards, Longs’ has remained committed to meeting the needs of Penn Yan residents and visitors alike.

With a legacy of community service and customer care, Longs’ continues to be a cherished part of the Finger Lakes community. “Shopping locally is absolutely the lifeblood of the community and its economy”, stated Gloria Long.
