A 12-year-old girl is recovering from a leg injury after being struck by a car while walking to school in the village of Penn Yan.
According to Penn Yan Police, the accident happened around 7 Tuesday morning when 66-year-old Sharon Elwell, of Penn Yan, attempted to turn left from Chapel Street onto Liberty Street. According to Police, Elwell reportedly failed to yield to the girl, who was in the crosswalk at the time.
The injured child was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Penn Yan Ambulance for treatment.
Elwell was issued a traffic ticket for failure to yield to a pedestrian.
Police continue to remind drivers to exercise caution, especially in areas where children may be walking to and from school.
