Passenger Killed After Transit Bus Strikes Tree in Tompkins County

Police are trying to determine the cause of a fatal accident that occurred in Tompkins County involving a Transit bus struck a tree on West Lake Road near Chaffee Road in Dryden.

The bus, owned by First Transit of Cortland, had six people on board, including the driver when it crashed into a tree at around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. One of the passengers, 63-year-old Kevin Welch from Cortland, was pronounced dead at Guthrie Cortland Hospital.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment of their injuries, while four other passengers were taken to Cayuga Medical Center for evaluation.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the following agencies: The New York State Police, Dryden Fire Department, Freeville Fire Department, Dryden Ambulance, TLC Ambulance, Lifenet, Guthrie Air, the Town of Dryden Highway Department, and Brecht’s Towing.
