A new school-based health center for students who attend school in Penn Yan is opening. Finger Lakes Community Health will operate a new Health Center inside the Penn Yan Elementary School just for students.
Community Health CEO Mary Zelazny says the Center is needed because in most cases, both parents in a household are working.
“Children go to school and they get sick, they have issues that come up during the day. Mom or Dad has to try to get them an appointment and then come and get them and transportation might be an issue and they might not be able to leave work because they don’t have any paid time-off they can use.”
Zelazny says parents will still get a phone call from the school nurse if their child is sick. The Center will provide a safe, comfortable setting that is familiar to students within the Elementary School. Parents are welcome to accompany their child to these appointments and can join via the telephone or by video as well.
An open house on the Center will be held at the Penn Yan Elementary School on Tuesday from 4 until 5:30 p.m. and all Penn Yan school parents and their children are invited to attend.
