Cornell University has officially promoted Eric Stickel to chief of police, effective immediately. Stickel, who had been serving as interim chief since September 20 following the retirement of Chief Anthony Bellamy, previously served as deputy chief.

David Honan, associate vice president for public safety, announced it on Thursday. Honan praised Stickel’s dedication, professionalism, and leadership, saying his “commitment to campus safety, community engagement and operational excellence has earned the respect of his peers and the broader Cornell community.”

Stickel, who has more than 17 years of law enforcement experience, emphasized his focus on accountability, transparency, inclusivity, and community-based policing. “I believe that relationships are only built at the speed of trust,” he said, adding that his involvement in local schools, town events, and youth programs will guide his work as chief.

Stickel began his CUPD career as an officer in 2008 and rose through the ranks: patrol sergeant in 2015, training sergeant in 2019, uniformed lieutenant in 2021, and deputy chief in 2022. His awards include the Frank G. Hammer Officer of the Month, the Tompkins County STOP DWI Award of Excellence, and the Director’s Citation for outstanding performance in a life-threatening medical emergency. He also spent 10 years as a drug recognition expert.

Stickel earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Lycoming College in 2007 and has completed the FBI National Academy. He is currently pursuing a Master of Public Safety at the University of Virginia.

Outside of law enforcement, Stickel coaches girls’ soccer at Lansing High School.
