Municipalities in Cayuga and Tompkins Counties have received state funding to assist with their smart growth.
Auburn and Cayuga County have received $90,000 and $103,500 respectively through the state’s Smart Growth Community Planning and Zoning Grants award program. Auburn will use its funding to update its comprehensive plan to incorporate smart growth principles and address concerns in areas such as housing, infrastructure, childcare, and public services. The county will use the funding it is receiving to develop a plan that offers progressive direction for the county and its 33 municipalities.
Additionally, the county has been awarded $160,000 through the Environmental Protection Fund Brownfield Opportunity Area grant award program. This money will be used to complete a countywide inventory of vacant, underutilized, and potentially contaminated sites.
In Tompkins County, Ithaca and Lansing have received $257,250 and $100,000 respectively. Ithaca will use its funding to update its zoning code to implement its comprehensive plan and modernize land use regulations. Lansing will use the money it’s receiving to update its zoning code as outlined in ints 2018 comprehensive plan to ensure the longterm protection of the town’s natural resources.
Funding for these programs comes from the Department of State.
