Ithaca’s Stewart Park Nominated for Historic Places Registers

A park owned by the city of Ithaca is being nominated to the state and national registers of historic places.

Stewart Park has been a recreational park enjoyed by generations of Ithaca residents. There are five visually distinct areas within four historic parcels, all of which were developed from the late 1800s through the 1950s. The park retains several buildings and structures that are unusual surviving examples of their types with a high degree of architectural integrity that help illustrate systems chosen for their uses.

“New York’s built environment reminds us of our state’s rich and diverse history,” Governor Hochul said. “These nominations reflect parts of our past and demonstrate New Yorkers capacity for growth, innovation, demonstration, and change. Adding these sites to our historic registers emphasizes the roles that they have played – and will continue to play – in New York’s story.”

“Investment in our historic resources is an investment in our future. State Parks knows how extraordinary our resources are and we are committed to preserving and promoting that historic fabric.”

State and National Register listings can assist in revitalizing properties, making them eligible for various public preservation programs and services, such as matching state grants and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “Investment in our historic resources is an investment in our future. State Parks knows how extraordinary our resources are and we are committed to preserving and promoting that historic fabric. With State and National Registers recognition, opportunities for state and federal tax credits can help drive preservation efforts forward and encourage additional investments in our communities.”

The State and National Registers are the official lists of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects and sites significant in the history, architecture, archaeology and culture of New York State and the nation. There are more than 120,000 historic properties throughout the state listed on the National Register of Historic Places, individually or as components of historic districts. Property owners, municipalities, and organizations from communities throughout the state sponsored the nominations.

Once recommendations are approved by the Commissioner, who serves as the State Historic Preservation Officer, the properties are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and then nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, where they are reviewed and, once approved, entered on the National Register.
