The City of Ithaca has received a 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI).
MEI is a national benchmarking tool used to evaluate how inclusive a municipality’s laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ+ individuals who live and work in the city. Ithaca is touting the score and said it highlights progress in several areas.
• Non-Discrimination Laws: Comprehensive policies that protect individuals from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
• Municipality as an Employer: Inclusive employment practices and benefits for LGBTQ+ employees.
• Municipal Services: Programs and initiatives that cater to the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
• Law Enforcement: Commitment to fair enforcement and community engagement, with strong ties to LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.
• Leadership on LGBTQ+ Equality: Proactive efforts to advance LGBTQ+ rights and ensure a welcoming community for all residents and visitors.
“Ithaca’s score on the 2024 Municipal Equality Index is a testament to our city’s continuous work to ensure that every member of our community feels valued, respected, and protected,” said Gregg Houck, Youth Bureau Director and LGBTQ+ Community Liaison. “We will continue to evaluate our opportunities for growth and improvement as we strive for full inclusivity and equality, but this recognition affirms that our current efforts are making a meaningful impact.”
