After completing 17 years of honorable service to the Ithaca community, Lieutenant Jake Young retired from the Ithaca Police Department Friday.
Lieutenant Young earned the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant while serving at the Ithaca Police Department. He was also assigned to supervise the Patrol Division during his career in the capacities of Acting Captain and Acting Deputy Chief. Lieutenant Young also had many roles and tasks throughout his time at IPD where he was a member of the Traffic Unit, the Administrative Sergeant, Operations Sergeant, and the Training Coordinator.
He also served in several ancillary roles to include being the commander of both the Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team and the Ithaca-Tompkins Specialized Response Team. Lieutenant Young not only spent his career serving the citizens of Ithaca, but he was also instrumental in revolutionizing and updating police training curriculum, making IPD’s training some of the best New York State.
The President of the Ithaca PBA, Thomas Condzella, said “Anytime one of our experienced members retires, it’s bitter sweet. We’re grateful for Lieutenant Young’s service and thankful for the time he dedicated to our community. We anticipate more retirements in 2024 and can only hope that recruitment efforts are able to keep up. Regardless, there’s no way to replace the institutional knowledge and experience that Lieutenant Young will be taking with him. We wish him and his family the very best.”
