The International Motor Racing Research Center is gearing up for its ninth annual “Michael R. Argetsinger Automotive Historians Motorsports Symposium,” returning to Watkins Glen later this week. In conjunction with the symposium, the Center is also hosting the “Reel Wheel Film Festival.” The Center’s Kip Zeiter says the Glen Theatre will host the Festival, which will begin Thursday night.

“We’re showing two films. The first will be at 6 o’clock on Thursday, and it’s going to be “Watkins Glen, The Street Years, 1948 to 1952,” said Zeiter. “It seemed appropriate to begin our film festival with a movie about the history of racing, beginning here in Watkins Glen. This is the highly acclaimed, universally acknowledged piece that WSKG, the PBS station in Binghamton, produced a number of years ago. It’s a fabulous movie about how racing got started here in 1948, and how they raced through the streets up until 1952.”

Thursday’s 7 p.m. film is”Legends of Racing: Bryan Clauson’s Chasing 200,” a FloSports original film. Friday night’s film at 6 p.m. is “Team 28,” a documentary that takes a behind-the-scenes look at open-wheeled asphalt Modified racing. At 7:15 p.m. on Friday, “Norwood Arena, the Movie,” a documentary that chronicles the true story of a historic NASCAR short track in suburban Boston, where several racing legends were born.

Zeiter said the “Reel Wheel Film Festival” is for everyone.

“These are all free,” said Zeiter. “We have been able to rent the Watkins Theatre courtesy of the good graces of the owner, Julie Krause, who’s delightful. And, you know, we are offering all of these films free of charge. So, when was the last time you went to a movie theater and saw some movies for free?”
