Former Esperanza Owners Indicted on Corruption, Fraud

A Yates County grand jury has indicted the former co-owners of a historic property overlooking Keuka Lake on multiple felony charges, including enterprise corruption, grand larceny, and perjury.

District Attorney Todd Casella announced that 59-year-old Todd Alexander, 60-year-old Mary Olivo, and Esperanza Management Group LLC, a company owned by Alexander,  were arraigned last week in Yates County Court under a sealed indictment. State Supreme Court Justice Jason Cook presided over the arraignment.

The indictment’s first count, enterprise corruption, alleges that the defendants knowingly participated in a pattern of criminal activity tied to a criminal enterprise.

Alexander, Olivo, and Esperanza Management Group LLC are also charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, and second-degree forgery related to a state liquor license. The indictment further includes charges of grand larceny and attempted larceny involving property valued at more than $50,000 from Lawrence Mehlenbacher and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Three counts of tampering with physical evidence are also included, two of which involve falsified QuickBooks records and another alleging that evidence, including business records, invoices, and a liquor license, was removed from the mansion to conceal it.

In addition, Alexander faces charges of second-degree tax fraud, two counts of third-degree tax fraud, and multiple counts of perjury. Olivo is also charged with one count of second-degree perjury.

A pretrial conference is scheduled virtually for December 3, with motions or a possible plea expected to be considered on February 4, 2026.

Control of the property shifted to the Alexanders’ investment partners, Larry and Elizabeth Mehlenbacher, in March 2020, leading to a legal dispute between the parties that was resolved earlier this year.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
