The Penn Yan Fire Department responded to a house fire in the village Sunday night. The blaze on Garfield Avenue, just off East Main Street, was reported to 911 at 6:19 p.m.
Firefighters remained on scene for nearly two hours as the fire caused significant damage to the back of the residence. A corgi rescued from the fire is recovering after emergency crews revived her at the scene.
According to a GoFundMe page, Minnie, the dog of Katherine Vanaman, was found unconscious inside the smoke-filled home and carried out by first responders. Crews performed lifesaving measures in the ambulance and were able to resuscitate her before rushing her to an animal hospital.
Minnie remains under veterinary care as she recovers from smoke exposure and other effects of the fire. Her family says the initial treatment costs were significant, with additional expenses expected as she continues to heal.
Fire officials say it’s rare for pets to survive fires of this magnitude, calling Minnie’s rescue a testament to the quick actions and determination of volunteers and emergency responders. A fundraiser has been launched to help cover her medical bills.
