An early-morning structure fire caused significant damage to a home on State Route 14A in the Town of Reading on Friday, though all occupants were able to escape safely, according to the Watkins Glen Fire Department.
At 6:40 a.m., the Watkins Glen Fire Department was dispatched to 4222 State Route 14A for a reported structure fire. While responding, WGFD Car 19 was advised by the Schuyler County 911 Center that all occupants had evacuated the residence and that the fire was confirmed to be in the kitchen.
Upon arrival, Car 19 reported heavy smoke showing and completed a 360-degree assessment of the home, confirming once again that everyone was out and that the fire remained contained to the kitchen area.
WGFD Engine 33 arrived shortly after and made entry through the front side of the residence. Firefighters were able to quickly attack the blaze and confine it to the kitchen, preventing further spread. Assisting agencies aided with overhaul operations.
According to officials, fire damage was contained to the kitchen, though smoke and heat damage extended throughout the home. No injuries were reported.
The Schuyler County Fire Investigation Team conducted an on-scene investigation. A cause has not yet been determined.
