The investigation into the report of a sexual assault and drugging at one Cornell University fraternity has led to the temporary suspension of a number of students.
In a statement, Interim President Michael Kotlikoff said the Chi Phi fraternity remains temporarily suspended amid the ongoing criminal investigation into an October 25th incident at its Edgemore Lane house in which a person reported being sexually assaulted and coerced into using ketamine and other drugs by several men. It was not disclosed how long the temporary suspensions would last, and the suspended students were not named.
While the Cornell University Police Department continues to pursue its criminal investigation, Cornell’s Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards and the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX have been reviewing all reported information regarding the “many allegations that have been received pertaining to events at the fraternity.” These offices have taken a number of actions in response, including addressing immediate health, safety, and educational concerns.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
