Family and friends are rallying around a Keuka College senior whose life was profoundly changed during the past holiday season.
On December 27th, MaKenna DeMoney, who is the catcher on the Wolves softball team, suffered second and third-degree burns to her face, ears, neck, hands, abdomen, and chest, while home on break. The incident that led to her injuries is under criminal investigation in Broome County.
The Conklin native is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
Friends and family describe MaKenna as a high-honor student, talented artist, and skilled crafter whose kindness and compassion have touched countless lives. She is currently a Psychology major with a concentration in Forensics at Keuka and is scheduled to graduate in May.
For the Keuka softball program, this situation is bigger than any game.
“The one thing that I have learned the most from being involved in athletics for almost 50 years now, is that the wins and the losses, the X’s and the O’s don’t mean as much as the relationships and friendships that are developed between teammates, coaches and players, opponents and even officials,” said head coach Jamie Burke. “Teammates picking each other up and being there for each other when the other has been knocked down. It is lessons such as this that athletics provide us with and in the end, is what makes us the real winners in the game of life.”
A GoFundMe page set up for MaKenna has raised around $40,000. If you would like to donate or send cards, letters, or words of encouragement to Makenna and the family, please click here
