City of Ithaca Prepares for Winter Storm

SHARE NOW

The City of Ithaca is preparing for a winter storm expected to bring freezing temperatures and heavy snow to the area beginning Sunday.

City officials are urging residents to take the forecast seriously and make plans ahead of time. Odd–even parking rules are now in effect, and drivers are reminded to follow them so plows and emergency vehicles can move through neighborhoods safely. Cars parked in violation could slow snow removal and create dangerous conditions.

Residents are being asked to keep an eye on changing weather conditions, especially overnight freezing temperatures that could lead to icy roads and sidewalks even before snow begins to fall. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time, avoiding unnecessary trips during the height of the storm, and checking on neighbors who may need help. Homeowners are also reminded to clear snow and ice from sidewalks.

The City’s Department of Public Works says crews are fully prepared and will be working throughout the storm. Plowing will focus first on major roads, emergency routes, and high-traffic or steep areas. Equipment and staffing are in place to handle the expected snowfall and keep roads passable.

Mayor Robert Cantelmo said the city is ready for the storm and stressed the importance of residents doing their part. “Our teams are prepared and focused on keeping Ithaca moving and safe,” Cantelmo said. “Following odd–even parking rules and staying informed makes a real difference.”

Acting City Manager Dominick Recckio added that DPW crews are ready to respond as conditions change and asked residents to plan ahead and give crews room to work.

If conditions worsen, the city says updates and guidance will be shared through official communication channels.

Residents are also reminded to report power outages directly to NYSEG by calling 1-800-572-1131 or by using the company’s online or mobile reporting tools. Updates are also available on NYSEG’s outage map.

City officials encourage everyone to stay informed, check on neighbors, and take precautions as the storm moves in.
