The Ithaca Fire Department has responded twice this week to a hazardous materials incident at the city’s Water Treatment Plant, following the accidental creation of chlorine gas during a routine chemical delivery.
According to officials, on Tuesday, two incompatible chemicals were mistakenly mixed, producing chlorine gas—a dangerous substance when concentrated in enclosed spaces. Fire crews responded to the scene and, after monitoring, initially declared the facility safe to reenter.
However, on Wednesday morning, plant operators discovered that efforts to fully clear the gas had not been successful, and residual chlorine remained inside the building. Firefighters and a hazmat team returned to the facility and continue working to ensure it is safe for staff.
Authorities emphasize that there is no threat to public health or the city’s water supply. Chlorine gas dissipates quickly in open air and has not impacted water quality. The city is also coordinating with the Bolton Point Water System to prevent any disruption in water service.
The water supply remains safe and is under continuous monitoring, officials said.
