The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office could return to Watkins Glen International.
A resolution allowing the Chair of the Cayuga County Legislature and Cayuga County Sheriff to enter into a mutual aid agreement with Schuyler County and its sheriff’s office has advanced through Cayuga County’s Ways and Means Committee.
According to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck, the primary reason for the agreement is to assist with the large crowds anticipated to come to the Town of Dix and surrounding areas September 13-15 for the weekend of NASCAR’s Go Bowling at the Glen. The agreement would allow Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies to provide extra manpower at the event to help alleviate the burden on Schuyler County deputies.
Throughout the racing and concert season, the area can see crowds of over 20,000 people. Watkins Glen International has a capacity of 38,900.
There would be no cost to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office as it would be fully reimbursed by Schuyler County.
Schenck explained at the June Judicial & Public Safety Committee meeting that the two law enforcement agencies have had mutual aid agreements in the past; however, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the agreements weren’t renewed.
The full legislature is expected to vote on the matter on Tuesday.
