A fire at the Steuben County Landfill Monday afternoon was quickly brought under control thanks to fast action by landfill personnel and multiple fire departments.
The fire broke out in the landfill’s cardboard bay. County staff used a water truck to knock down most of the flames before the Bath Fire Department arrived on the scene to fully extinguish the fire. Landfill crews also helped by pulling the burning cardboard into the open to give firefighters better access.
Hammondsport and Kanona fire departments assisted at the scene. Officials say the quick response by landfill staff and a local garbage hauler likely prevented more significant damage.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
