Blue-Green Algae Advisory Issued for Penn Yan Swim Areas

SHARE NOW

The New York State Department of Health has issued a Blue-Green Algae Advisory for the swim area at Red Jacket AND Indian Pine Parks in Penn Yan after a harmful algal bloom was detected.

Officials say the bloom, commonly known as blue-green algae, can pose health risks to both people and animals. The water may appear green or develop thick scums on the surface. Direct contact can cause skin and eye irritation, and ingesting the water may lead to nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

As a precaution, the swim area at both parks are closed until further notice. However, the park’s other facilities, including the playground, pavilion, and picnic areas, remain open to the public.

The Department of Health is urging the public to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid swimming, wading, or fishing near visible algae or scums
  • Do not drink the water
  • Keep children and pets away from the water
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water if exposed

Anyone experiencing symptoms after contact with water in the area should report them to the Department of Health at (315) 789-3030. The swim area will reopen once it is deemed safe.
