Authorities have identified the driver who died in a vehicle crash and fire on State Route 13 last month. An autopsy confirmed the victim as 71-year-old Susan Vieselmeyer of Breesport.
The crash occurred on December 22 at approximately 2:00 p.m., when Schuyler County 911 received a report of an erratic vehicle traveling southbound on State Route 13. Troopers responding to the call were redirected to the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle fire.
Upon arrival, troopers found a Subaru Forester fully engulfed in flames. Initial attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful due to its intensity, but the Horseheads Town and County Fire Department eventually put out the flames. Troopers located Vieselmeyer in the driver’s seat.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling southbound when it left the roadway, struck a cattle fence, continued through a field for approximately 75 to 100 yards, and collided with a tree.
The Chemung County Medical Examiner responded to the scene, and an autopsy was conducted to confirm the identity of the deceased and determine the official cause of death.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
